Web hosting death spiral

More proof that nothing lasts forever... Our current web host has finally oversold to the point that the disk we share is filling up regularly. We had hoped we'd found someone who would break the cycle we've seen so often... They run a fairly low-key business, offices in Bulgaria and servers in Taiwan. They've been great on support so I'll give them a chance to respond to the situation, but from past experience (with other hosts) I expect this is the beginning of the end. Oh, well.

If things break or just fail mysteriously, the disk is probably wedged again. I've just gotten through reconstructing greymatter files that were eaten last time around.

RSS...

Might work a little better now that it's been truncated to the first forty words of each post. (And perhaps I should trim that a little further.)

Pardon me boys, is that the lair of Great Cthulhu?

Tami hasn't read Lovecraft and is thus a bit perplexed by the prevalence of the Cthulhu meme. Actually, even though I have been a carrier for this meme for most of my life I'm at a loss to explain the popularity. But at least it inspired me to drag out some links:

This has got to be the best Cthulhoid link ever. And it just turned up randomly after our discussion yesterday.

Hello Cthulhu has nothing on Mac Hall's littlest elder god. (Also here, plus sketches here, here and here.)

I've heard that Penny Arcade sometimes features Cthulhu, but I don't follow the strip enough to have seen it and I'm not up to searching through their archives.

In fact, juxtaposing eldritch horror with unspeakable cuteness is a major theme.

Dancing Cthulhu. Seriously.

Cthulhu for president/Campus Crusade for Cthulhu has been a running gag probably since the seventies. It was already going strong when I entered fandom in the early 80's. As of the past few years, though, perhaps the "when you're tired of voting for the lesser of two evils" slogan needs to be rethought.

According to googlefight, Cthulhu is more popular than his/its creator.

Come to the conventacle, bring along your pentacle

Or else you might be dragged off by a tentacle!

Full circle

As her hair swung forward, under her collar, there was another, bright flash. "Ugly thing. I hope I don't need you."

I said: "Hope you don't either."

...

Waiting here, away from the terrifying weaponry, out of the halls of vapor and light, beyond holland and into the hills, I have come to

to wound the autumnal city. - Dhalgren, Samuel R. Delaney.

I read it at fifteen and only comprehended the poetry of it; at twenty I understood it. Technically.

Now I get it. And no, I don't care that a typographical error had something to do with it.

Endings

For a few years I accompanied a friend to the New York Rennaissance Festival to sell knives and armor. Those were great summers - exciting, exhausting, endlessly entertaining. As a natural recluse, it was a very different experience for me to be a part of the thriving community that lived behind the scenes there.

Goodbye, BlogShares

I'm kind of poleaxed at the moment, I've just discovered that blogshares is gone.

I knew it was going down the skids, but I had hopes of saving it. Just as life is settling down after the interminable Move From Hell (which is still not entirely over), I find I've missed my chance.

There are about a hundred more things I could say about the experience, its abrupt end, and the aftermath. But I'll save them for later.

RSS

At the behest of Morgaine I've added RSS. That plus something interesting to write about, and I'll be in business.

A link! A link!

Sometime in the midst of my move Alex linked to me. My heart swells with joy. Although technically I've been linked before, this is the first one that BlogShares has picked up. I have market share! 0.000138329040522109%, granted, but it's a start.

Nonrefundable pet deposit

That phrase just keeps rattling around in my head. Nonrefundable pet deposit. On the one hand, it's kind of a self-contained lie; if you can't get it back, it was never a deposit in the first place. On the other, there's a brutal honesty there: no false hope of getting that deposit back, so I might as well let the little bastard eat the carpet and kill the border grass. (Not really... I have to live here too, after all.) I don't know whether to be insulted or relieved: the net effect is just somewhat amused.

Boomtime, 25 Aftermath 3169

The move continues, the downtime begins.

Today the computers move away from internet access... Next Boomtime (that's Tuesday the 18th for you Greyface types) we're back online with a new ISP. Hopefully.

How spoiled I've become: If I have to go back to a modem, I'll be sorely disppointed. In fact, I haven't even entertained the notion of using a dialup for the interim. All or nothing, baby!

Moving Day

It's times like these that I wish I'd treated my body a little better along the way. I'm not the least bit surprised that my lifestyle has left me horribly out of shape... But damn. One load of boxes up, and I'm already dreading those stairs. Still, with a little breather here and there I'll be able to do it. Especially when my helpers show up. ;)

What I'm really dreading is the change in ISP... I've grown very fond of the one I'm leaving and am already apprehensive about the other - which is my only option in the new place. Downtime should begin in two to three days.

Boomtime, 5 Aftermath 3169 (Maladay)

Happy Maladay!

Although Maladay honors Malaclypse the Elder, I'll relate my favorite bit about Malaclypse the Younger:

... Suddenly the place became devoid of light. Then an utter silence enveloped them, and a great stillness was felt. Then came a blinding flash of intense light, as though their very psyches had gone nova. Then vision returned.

The two were dazed and neither moved nor spoke for several minutes. They looked around and saw that the bowlers were frozen like statues in a variety of comic positions, and that a bowling ball was steadfastly anchored to the floor only inches from the pins that it had been sent to scatter. The two looked at each other, totally unable to account for the phenomenon. The condition was one of suspension, and one noticed that the clock had stopped.

There walked into the room a chimpanzee, shaggy and grey about the muzzle, yet upright to his full five feet, and poised with natural majesty. He carried a scroll and walked to the young men.

"Gentlemen," he said, "why does Pickering's Moon go about in reverse orbit? Gentlemen, there are nipples on your chests; do you give milk? And what, pray tell, Gentlemen, is to be done about Heisenberg's Law?" He paused. "SOMEBODY HAD TO PUT ALL OF THIS CONFUSION HERE!"

And with that he revealed his scroll. It was a diagram, like a yin- yang with a pentagon on one side and an apple on the other. And then he exploded and the two lost consciousness.

Go read the rest.

Meanwhile, on Blogshares, I'm turning minds to goo! Hail Eris!

Did I miss a memo? Did folks have this out and come to some understanding before I got into blogging?

And now I've got that Jethro Tull song about Orion stuck in my head...

The SpaceWriter's Ramblings - a newcomer to BlogShares, and a good read to boot.

There's TONS of interesting stuff here; I'll be going back to dig through the archives as time permits.

Undesiderata

I was thinking of this lately; I like it far better than the original.
Particularly this bit:

"Kick your own ass. The universe neither cares about you nor recognizes any
obligation to you. It is fixed and blind, a mad robot programmed to kill.
You are free and seeing; you must outwit it at every poor turn."
