Ramblings

Tami hasn't read Lovecraft and is thus a bit perplexed by the prevalence of the Cthulhu meme. Actually, even though I have been a carrier for this meme for most of my life I'm at a loss to explain the popularity. But at least it inspired me to drag out some links:

This has got to be the best Cthulhoid link ever. And it just turned up randomly after our discussion yesterday.

Hello Cthulhu has nothing on Mac Hall's littlest elder god. (Also here, plus sketches here, here and here.)

I've heard that Penny Arcade sometimes features Cthulhu, but I don't follow the strip enough to have seen it and I'm not up to searching through their archives.

In fact, juxtaposing eldritch horror with unspeakable cuteness is a major theme.

Dancing Cthulhu. Seriously.

Cthulhu for president/Campus Crusade for Cthulhu has been a running gag probably since the seventies. It was already going strong when I entered fandom in the early 80's. As of the past few years, though, perhaps the "when you're tired of voting for the lesser of two evils" slogan needs to be rethought.

According to googlefight, Cthulhu is more popular than his/its creator.

Come to the conventacle, bring along your pentacle

Or else you might be dragged off by a tentacle!

Most of the cult are into it because it's So Cool and fannish and weird and their friends or sexual partners like it. A few of us are deeperly engaged. The bottom line for me was HPL was a fantastic storyteller, and also a window on the 1930s version of the visionary loner. All the stories fit together in subgroupings, and discovering the connections is part of the interestingness.

Creatures like Cthulhu, the Mi-Go, the Shoggoths and the Great Old Ones aren't one and the same in these stories...they're not equivalent as monstrosities. They were from different planets, and often fought against one another. . This is how you tell a real Lovecraft geek from a fannish version. The latter don't know important little details like that.

Jesus, that psychaotici guy was creepy. I think I'm content with being of the "fannish"-type.

Along the subject of fan-boy addictions, here's the URL of that Penny-Arcade you mentioned in this post: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2000-01-14&res=l

Penny-Arcade has a nifty search feature on their website so you don't have to go through all of their comics.

Lastly, I've thoroughly enjoyed your site. Keep on keepin' on.
